"It's a great feeling to know I helped students," said Michaela Garza-Keyes, eighth grade student at Coakley Middle School. "I have always wanted to give back to the community because it has done so much for me." 

 

Garza-Keyes along with an additional 14 students from secondary campuses across the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District are able to assist in the advancement of their fellow students and city though their participation in the Superintendent's Student Advisory Board (SAB).

Person of the Week: Saldivar spends the years with HCISD
  

              

When Antonio Saldivar walks through the doors at District Operations office at the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District, you can bet that someone will jokingly ask him when he's going to retire.

 

Saldivar is regularly asked this question because with 42 years at HCISD, he the longest serving member of the district.

Sam Houston Chess teams make all the right moves at national tournament
  
              

The Sam Houston Chess Team proved they could compete against the best at the 2013 SuperNationals V Chess Tournament held in Nashville, Tennessee on April 7.

 

In the K3 division, the team of Maxx Perez, Christian Cruz, Ernesto Garcia, Gianelli Serrano, and David Rodriguez placed sixth out of total of 76 schools.

High School golf teams stay on par at District Tournament
   

                  

The Harlingen High School and Harlingen High School South Varsity Golf Programs were on par at the District tournament on April 9.

 

The HHSS boys' team won the team competition with a two round score of 633.  The win earned them their third consecutive District Championship, and their fifth championship in the past six years.

HHSS student-athlete continues track career
 

                

Oscar Garza, Harlingen High School South Senior, has made the choice to continue his education and athletic career in the Fall of 2013.

 

Garza signed his letter of intent to run track at St. Gregory on April 5. Administration, teachers and students came out to share the excitement in the HHSS gymnasium.

HHSS tennis players sign letter of intent to continue academic and athletic excellence
  
        

For Harlingen High School South seniors, Danielle Stillman and Andrea Alaniz, their work to maintain excellence in the classroom and on the tennis court will continue after they graduate this May.

 

Stillman and Alaniz signed their letters of intent to play tennis at the collegiate level on April 8.

The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District's high school basketball programs had an outstanding season with many of the athletes receiving honors for their athletic abilities.

 

Harlingen High School and Harlingen High School South student athletes were awarded positions on the 32-5A All District Team.

HHSS Student performs for Harlingen Learning Community
  

                           

Harlingen High School South senior Erik Rodriguez showed off his acting abilities during the April Harlingen Learning Community meeting on April 10.

 

Rodriguez performed a one-man piece titled Inside Al. The play captures moments in the life of a child diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

Lamar recycling club raises $1,350 for wildlife
  

                

The student's at Lamar Elementary School are helping save sea turtles across the globe and close to home.

 

The Eagle Recycle Club (ERC) at Lamar sponsored a fundraiser for Sea Turtle Inc. on South Padre Island. Lamar raised a total of $1,350.
